Condenser Tumble Dryer Useful Information
There are two air flow circuits operating in parallel inside a condenser tumble dryer. The cool air circuit, driven by a motorised fan such as Typical plastic moulded fan continuously blows cool air drawn in through a vent in the casing from outside of the dryer, through the veins of the condenser unit in an attempt to keep it as cool as possible. So, it is important to use a condenser dryer in as low an ambient temperature as is reasonably possible, this way the dryer is able to work more efficiently than if the dryer is working in a central heated room where the room ambient temperature is say a comfortable 60'F. The second air flow system is at the same time blowing hot air, heated by the element inside of the dryer, through the center of the tumbling clothes, here the hot air picks up moisture from the clothes and continues via the lint filter and ducting inside the machine, to the condenser unit, but this time the air is blown through veins at right angles and inter leaved with the first cool air flow, so that the warm, moisture laden air is thus cooled down by the cold air flowing simultaneously through the condenser, thereby, encouraged to give up its moisture, (condensate) which is then run off from the condenser, purely by gravity, into some kind of a well where it can then be either drained off manually or pumped out to an external drain.
Most condenser dryers are constructed with a bottle that can be removed, situated near the floor, this saves on the cost of a pump and generally is less complicated, less to go wrong. Others choose to place this bottle at the top of the dryer, so the condensate has to pumped up to this type of bottle, or sometimes it can be pumped straight out to the outside and into an external drainage system, some dryers have the option of both.
In some dryers, the two fans are positioned on the shaft of, and so driven by, the same motor, one fan being positioned on one end of the motor shaft and the other fan on the opposite end of the motor shaft, in this situation, the speed of both fans is determined by the speed of the drum rotation as all three functions are driven by just the one motor. In other dryers they choose to have a separate motor with its own fan supplying the cold air for the condenser cooling circuit, this has the advantage of being able to independently choose the speed of the cold air fan motor, and where to position this same unit for more freedom of access as all these air circuits require to be kept reasonably clean in order for the dryer to continue to function effeiciently.
The first thing that should always be checked, every use, is the lint (fluff) filter. In every condenser dryer, a serviceable, washable, replaceable filter is fitted, so that it can easily be cleaned and replaced. Second, on all condenser dryers, is the condenser itself, which is usually situated so that it can easily be removed from the dryer and cleaned, cleaning is best done by hosing the unit through with a hose pipe, or immersing in a bucket of warm water and generally being swished about to remove as much of the accumulated sludge and lint as possible. DO NOT SCRAPE OR CLEAN WITH A KNIFE OR ANY ABRASIVE TOOL, as the veins are very thin walled and can be easily punctured and if this should happen the condenser is scrap and would need to be replaced!
